People with braces should follow these oral care tips to keep their smiles healthy.
Whether our Forest Lake, WI, orthodontist Dr. Gregory Ross has just provided you with braces or you’ve been going through this treatment process a while now, there are always tips and tricks to keeping your smile healthy that perhaps you didn’t even know.
Brush After Every Meal
To reduce plaque buildup between your brace and your teeth and gums you should definitely brush your teeth immediately after eating. Since most children and teens are at school and adults are working during the day, it’s important to always carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you so that you can brush your teeth wherever you go. While everyone needs to brush for at least 2 minutes every time, you may also find that you need a little extra time with braces.
Yes, You Can and Should Floss
One of the most common questions our Forest Lake, WI, orthodontists hear from patients with traditional braces is, “How do I floss with braces?” Yes, it is possible and yes, you absolutely need to floss your teeth every day. While traditional flossing techniques are still possible with braces, you may find it easier and more efficient to turn to threader floss or a water flosser.
Know When to Replace Your Toothbrush
Your toothbrush is not supposed to last a lifetime. In fact, a toothbrush has a rather short lifespan, and you may even go through brushes faster than usual now that you’re brushing more often throughout the day. Once you notice the bristles of your toothbrush looking worn it’s time to change it. You will most likely need to replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head at least every 2-3 months.
Cut Out Sugar
Okay, so we know that no one is going to be a big fan of this tip; however, the best way to prevent cavities is to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. Since braces make it even easier for sugar to get trapped between teeth and around braces, it’s important that you steer clear of sugar-laden drinks and foods as much as possible.
